Refresh Your Home this Summer

Ever walked into a home or building that instantly made you feel sick? Maybe it had strong paint and chemical smells, reeked of mold and dust, or just made you feel ill. It turns out, our indoor environment has a huge impact on us, influencing not only our moods but our health as well.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies those who may become ill in their indoor surroundings as experiencing sick building syndrome (SBS). That being said, how you protect your home environment this summer is important in the health of you and your loved ones. Here are ways to refresh your home this summer.

Add Air Filters: You’d be surprised how many items can dispense potentially harmful chemicals into your air. For example, there are more than 700 different chemicals that have been identified in an average glass of tap water. And these same contaminants in tap water become gasses at room temperature when you shower. A water filter can help create safer drinking water and a shower filter can help keep tap water toxins from becoming airborne. Also, replace or clean your air filters regularly to better insure a higher quality of air.

Improve Air Quality:  Healthy ventilation is an important factor in improving the air quality in your home. Indoor air can be up to five times as polluted as outdoor air due to being locked in the space. Stagnant air can house pollutants from dust, dirt, pesticides, cleaners, and more. Whenever possible, keep you windows and doors open to allow fresh air to flow in. Also, add a little green to your scene. Plants are natural air detoxifiers and can help bring in fresh oxygen. Plus, it adds a nice pop of color to your décor.

Clean Green: Making the switch from standard household cleaning products to green ones is one of the best things you can do for your home. The toxic household cleaners can greatly decrease the air quality in your home and has been linked to everything from asthma to memory loss. Think buying green cleaning products is too expensive? You can make your own! The online community is inundated with tips and ideas for making your own safe, non-toxic cleaners to clean every item in your home.
